Book Review: The Sparrow Sisters by Ellen Herrick

Book Review: The Sparrow Sisters by Ellen Herrick

I’ve been reading a lot of hefty books lately, and I needed something that was going to be a lighter read for the start of the semester. The Sparrow Sisters hit the spot! It was an incredibly quick read, and I enjoyed every moment of it. It takes place at the very start of summer and would’ve been a great beach read; however, I enjoyed it equally as much watching the snow fall out my window.

What it’s about:

This book is about a group of three sisters living on Cape Cod who help town residents by using natural remedies grown in their garden. Mainly, the action follows the youngest of the three sisters, Patience Sparrow. Throughout the events of a single, eventful summer, the plot explores romance and drama. Caught up in a town tragedy and seen as an outsider, Patience is weighed by the blame of local accusations and must fight to prove her innocence in the midst of heartbreak.

Who should read it:

I think this book would be perfect for those who enjoy charming, heartwarming reads that sweep you off your feet. There is something slightly mystical about this book. It immerses you in the world of the characters. My greatest pleasure, when reading this book was the way in which it depicted off-season Cape Cod so accurately. When reading the descriptions, it truly felt like I was there. Additionally, the characters were easy to fall in love with. Herrick depicts each one in such detail that you feel as though you truly know the people of the village when you finish the novel, and this doesn’t just go for the main characters! Each and every minor character is fleshed out to an impressive degree. When I finished this book, I felt like I actually missed the people within the novel!

Rating: 4/5

In terms of enjoyability, I would give this book five stars, but I will admit that it lacked the substance of my usual reads. Additionally, there are a couple of moments when the romance aspect of the book might go a bit over the top, at least in my opinion. Overall, however, I found this to be a truly delightful read, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for something short and sweet!
